Sushi Maru is one of the recently opened Japanese restaurant in Jakarta that delivers authentic Japanese cuisine, serving the diners with premium experience with fresh ingredients imported straight from Japan. The interior presents a traditional yet modern design inspired from Machiya, a traditional wooden townhouse found throughout Japan.
Machiya functioned as both residence and place of business with over a thousand years of history. It was known for the traditional carpentry techniques and kumki joinery methods that are sophisticated. The interpretation of Machiya can be seen implemented in the storefront of Sushi Maru, with horizontal and vertical wood treatments mainly using solid teak wood and Japanese clay roof tiles, or known as kawara
Entering the restaurant, the space presents a much larger area with double high ceiling foyer and two-storey dining space with VIPs room to cater private dining. This still in-line with the Machiya concept of having a small storefront while providing plenty space behind. And to maximize the space, the stairs that originally located at the back of the building was moved to the front. While perfectly exposed and combined with the hanging decorative lantern along with the small zen garden below, the area transforms into an attractive focal point throughout the building and also become the instagenic spot for the diners to capture some memory.
The materials used are mainly solid wood for the main wooden frame. With combination of textured paint and high-pressure laminate with flower pattern. The dominant use of wood material is to emphasize the warmth ambiance while showcasing the many variation of wooden treatment on the ceiling, wall and column of Sushi Maru that accentuate the modern Japanese design interpretation. The dining area at the back also accentuated by custom Japanese pattern tiles that adds the modern feel to the ambiance. Homogenous tiles also used for most of the area for easy maintenance.
Overall Sushi Maru interior design brings the diners to experience Japanese ambiance in a modern way while at the same time providing a comfortable and warm setting to enjoy the finest Japanese delicacies.
